Why Do Muslims Not Eat Pork?

Have you ever questioned people in the West what’s their favorite food? if you do, you would get “pork” as an answer from several hundred thousand people. Try it and give us feedback in the comment section.

Pork along with BBQ ribs and bacon remains the most commonly eaten meat around the world.

All these forms of Pig meat are inexpensive, readily available, and have a heavenly taste. As per an observer, people prefer eating pork also because it’s the only full-fat meat available in some parts of the World.

To be very honest, if we go on finding reasons, we would find endless reasons to eat and love pork. So, let’s not get off-topic.

Eating and selling pork in some parts of the world is breathtakingly common.

Whereas in some countries pig farming is neither encouraged nor is it sold in the markets or restaurants in any form. Surprised? Yes, there is a fair reason to be surprised.

As it seems nearly impossible how this immensely flavorful meat can remain unappreciated?

Have a hard time believing how one can hate or not appreciate pork? Well, in all the Muslim countries it’s impossible to find pork in the restaurant and pigs being farmed. Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Algeria, and Sudan are living examples of that.

Have you ever wondered why is it so? Why do Muslims hate pork? If I had been asked such questions a few years back.

I might have answered it this way “Because their religion does not permit so”. How true that is was discovered later. Since this post is all about revealing the truth; here’s why

Do Muslims Eat pork?

No for the record, the true Muslims do not eat pork however, the moderate Muslims are a whole different case. Just as there are countable Muslims who drink, there would be noticeable Muslims who do not mind eating pork as well. Muslims, in general, do not eat pork.

To be honest it’s not even a secret that Muslims do not drink and eat pork. The trick question is why do they do so?

Why Do Muslims Not Eat Pork?

They do not eat pork because it’s “Haram”. Islam forbids Muslims from eating pigs. Haram is an Arabic term that means forbidden.

It can be said that pork is forbidden. Allah forbids Muslims from eating pig meat several times in the Quran.

To be more specific, Surah Al-Baqarah, Al-Ma’idah, Al-An’am, and Al-Nahl are the four chapters where it is clearly stated as “forbidden”.

In the Surah Al-Baqarah (2:173) Allah Almighty says;

“He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [it’s limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful”

In Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:3) Allah Almighty says;

“Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows.

That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin – then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful”

In Surah Al-An’am (6:145) Allah Almighty says;

Say, ˹O Prophet, “I do not find in what has been revealed to me anything forbidden to eat except carrion, running blood, swine—which is impure—or a sinful offering in the name of any other than Allah. But if someone is compelled by necessity—neither driven by desire nor exceeding immediate need—then surely your Lord is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful”

In Surah Al-Nahl (16:115) Allah Almighty says;

“He has only forbidden you what is dead, blood, the flesh of swine and animal which is slaughtered in the name of others than Allah. But if one is forced by necessity (to eat), without willful disobedience, and not transgressing, then, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful (the One that sends the Glorious light of Mercy)”

So, the one legitimate reason why Muslims do not eat pork is to obey Allah Almighty’s order.

Christianity, a fellow Abrahamic religion, also prohibits the consumption of pork. In the book of Leviticus it is addressed as;

“And the swine, though he divide the hoof and be cloven-footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you”

“Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you”

In the book of Deuteronomy the Christians are forbidden this way;

“And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass”

If we take the Bible seriously, Christians should also not be eating pork for all the right reasons. Since we are all sinners(even Muslims), we are not abstaining from eating pork, drinking alcohol, and doing everything that’s forbidden.

It is seen that Muslims usually avoid eating pork however some Christians are a bit ignorant. But being ignorant does not make it lawful in the eyes of God whether it’s Christian or Muslim.

Besides being forbidden, the other reasons why Muslims do not eat pork

Besides pork being haram, Muslims do not eat pork for various non-religious reasons as well. Muslims do not eat pork because;

  • Pigs are filthy
  • Pigs are full of diseases
  • Pigs meat is hard to digest
  • It protects the spiritual health
  • Science has proven it to be harmful
  • Pigs are poisonous
  • Pork contains pus full of deadly diseases

Pigs are filthy

Muslims avoid eating pork as it comes from pigs that are deemed as filthy animals. There is a debate going on for years, the world is divided into two groups.

One group takes pigs as filthy animals whereas, the other thinks of them as a highly organized and clean animals. Both groups have reasons to support their idea.

Pigs are filthy because they eat their poop and keep rolling in the mud all day to prevent sunburn and stay cool.

Pigs are taken as organized and clean animals because they only evacuate their bowels in a specific place.

This discussion is still going on, none of these two groups has won yet. Despite being organized pigs have got the reputation of being filthy. So, the Muslims prefer not to eat filthy animals.

Pigs are full of diseases

It has been discovered that pigs contain more than 70 diseases including parasites, influenza, and worms.

Eating an animal that is full of diseases can never be healthy. Even if it can be avoided, improperly cooked pork can get people infected with trichinosis.

The people infected with trichinosis experience diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, cough, itchy skin, muscle pain, aching joints, constipation, and several other health issues.

Moreover, it is also proven that pig meat contains a good amount of cholesterol and nasty fats. Eating pork frequently causes colon, rectum, obesity, stomach ulcers, scabies, allergies, and prostate cancer. So to live and eat healthy Muslims avoid eating pork.

Pork is hard to digest

As we all know protein is harder to digest whereas fats are easier and faster to process.

Meat obtained from pigs, cattle, and chicken contains more protein than fats. So, pork, beef, and chicken go heavy on our digestive system.

To keep one’s digestive system working smoothly, pork is avoided.

It protects the spiritual health

The Muslims believe that doing or eating whatever is “haram” destroys physical health and corrupts the morals of a human being as well.

They believe that eating something that is haram would make them promiscuous. So, to protect one’s spiritual health Muslims abstain from pork.

Science has proven it to be harmful

It’s not that Muslims follow the Quran only, they take science seriously as well. As per the Scientists, pork contains hookworm, pinworm, roundworms, and the deadliest one of all tapeworms.

Upon consuming pork, hookworms, pinworms, roundworms, and tapeworms enter the person’s bloodstream.

The said worms reproduce in the pig’s body and become a reason for heart attack, blindness, memory loss, and liver damage. However other people eat Eat Pot Belly Pigs.

Cooking the pork well does not help either, say the scientists. The point is explained this way that the ovas present in the pork do not die even under normal or high cooking pressure.

The scientists have also not found any safe temperature that can kill the germs residing in the pork.

So, as the point is proven by the scientists as well Muslims and all knowledgeable people abstain from eating pork.

Pigs are poisonous

Did you know that pigs can not be killed by injecting Strychnine(poison)? Or why do people keep pigs to get rid of snakes? It’s because pigs are already poisonous, strychnine or snake bite can not be any more poisonous than the pigs themselves. How can an animal that can’t be killed by injecting poison be healthy to eat?

Pork contains pus full of deadly diseases

It is known to only a few of us that pigs contain oozes pus running down to their feet. When the said animal is slaughtered it gets mixed in the meat, so the pork we eat contains an amount of pus as well.

Pork is avoided because it is nothing but flesh full of pus and deadly diseases.

In brief, Muslims avoid eating pork mainly because their religion restricts them from doing so.

It is strictly forbidden by Allah Almighty in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:173), Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:3), Surah Al-An’am (6:145), and Surah Al-Nahl (16:115). Other than that Muslims abstain from eating pork because pigs are filthy, poisonous, and contain deadly diseases. They also avoid eating pork to protect their spiritual and physical well-being.
